Watford head coach Marco Silva wants quality over quantity when the January transfer window opens - in what is perhaps the most notable nod to the fringe players brought to the club at the end of the summer.

Molla Wague and Orestis Karnezis were both signed by the club on Transfer Deadline Day in August, and are yet to earn a start between them since their season-long loans from Udinese began.

Another deadline day signing, Marvin Zeegelaar, has fared considerably better after he too looked to have been sidelined as making up the numbers in the early weeks of his spell at Vicarage Road.

Injuries have played their part in the Hornets' season so far and will do so in Silva's January spending too, with club owner Gino Pozzo already well aware of his intentions.

He said: "Of course everything is different if you have all your players available. We started pre-season with a lot of injuries, and we’ll see what we can do during the January market. I hope we can do what we cannot do during August.

"It’s for us to decide where to strengthen, our board knows what I want and need to improve; some of the things we did not manage during the last market, I hope we can during the January window.

"It’s not about numbers, I want players who will improve our squad."
