Wealdstone were held to a 2-2 draw by 10-man Wingate and Finchley at Grosvenor Vale on Saturday, with Steve Wales' late penalty forcing a replay in north London.

Elliot Benyon was on target for the first time in seven games from the penalty spot and his strike, coupled from an unfortunate Rob Laney own goal, looked to have set Gordon Bartlett's side on their way into round two after coming from behind.

Before that, Laney had headed the visitors into a first-half lead, and they pulled level again through Wales' spot kick after he was fouled by Ciaron Brown with four minutes to go.

The teams will go head-to-head at the Harry Abrahams Stadium tomorrow to determine who goes forward to travel to Southport in round two.

Four changes were made to the starting line-up by Bartlett, including two after bizarre warm-up injuries, capping what has been a testing season of unavailability for the long-serving manager.

Johnny Wright and Liam Goulding were the duo to fall foul of the Grosvenor Vale pitch, while elsewhere Danny Green, Omar Koroma, Brown and Sam Cox returned to the starting line-up.

Laney would strike first in a first-half without a great deal of quality, glancing a header past Jonathan North from Wales' free-kick.

Sean Cronin nearly doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time from the same source, but within seconds of the restart the hosts were level.

Whatever Bartlett said to his charges at the break clearly worked, as Koroma was fouled in the Blues' box and Benyon stepped up to bury the penalty home.

Green's 30-yard free-kick nearly gave them the lead and was only denied by the crossbar, before Cronin, a former Wealdstone player, saw red for two quick-fire bookings following late challenges on Koroma.

The Stones took advantage with 10 minutes remaining as Laney added to his goal with a strike into his own net, from David Hunt's free-kick, but there was still more drama to come.

Wingate's determination to stay in the competition shone through as Laney, again in the thick of the action, capitalised on Josh McLeod Urquhart's slip before Brown upended him in the Wealdstone box.

He sent North the wrong way from the spot, to force tomorrow night's replay.

Wealdstone: North, Sheckleford, Brown, McLeod-Urquhart, Oshodi, Hunt (c), Freeman, Cox, Benyon, Koroma, Green.
