Watford legend John Barnes has told the Watford Observer he "cannot speak highly enough" of Troy Deeney after the Hornets captain's latest strike ensured him a double-digit return for the sixth straight year.

Such a feat has not been achieved since Barnes himself pulled on the yellow shirt back in 1987, his final season before a move to Liverpool at the end of the campaign.

Deeney's goal in the 2-0 win over West Brom on Tuesday night was also his fifth in his last eight games - with the former Walsall man coming into form at the perfect time with the Premier League entering its home straight.

Barnes, who was speaking on behalf of Bonus Code Bets, said: "Troy is a bit of an anomaly because he is a Watford man, and especially with the upheaval over the past five or six years, he is the one constant.

"If you look at any player now, I suppose you’ve got Wayne Rooney at Manchester United, Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard although they’ve both retired, but other than that there isn’t really a player which is synonymous with any one football club apart from Troy.

"Not just being a Watford man, he is also one of few English players who has stayed at one club and made such an impact. I can’t speak highly enough of him."
