Odion Ighalo’s career in the Chinese Super League has got off to a disappointing start after Changchun Yatai went down to a 5-1 defeat against Shanghai SIPG in their season opener.
The former Hornets striker, who made his club record move to China in January, captained Changchun, who took a 26th-minute lead through Fan Xiaodong.
But Shanghai, who are managed by former Tottenham Hotspur boss Andre Villas-Boas, were soon level thanks to a Hulk penalty and fellow Brazilian Cardoso Elkeson made it 2-1 before half-time.
Elkeson went on to complete his hat-trick by the hour mark and Wu Lei netted Shanghai’s fifth in injury time.
