Wealdstone picked up a much-needed 2-1 win at Weston-super-Mare on Saturday to move six points clear of the National League South relegation zone.

Skipper Wes Parker returned from the dead leg, sustained at Maidenhead United, last Saturday to replace Scott McGleish – so impressive against Oxford City last Monday – at centre-back. Marvin Morgan again started up front in a now familiar 4-5-1 formation.

The home side were missing the influential midfielder Dayle Grubb, who had limped off with a thigh injury in their home midweek defeat to Hayes & Yeading, as well as the suspended Scott Wilson who bagged a hat-trick against the Stones in the FA Trophy tie last month.

Stones started the more assured. Indeed, a well-worked move in the opening minutes between Scott Davies, Morgan and Bradley Hudson-Odoi saw the latter’s shot partially blocked by the onrushing Luke Purnell.

With the ball heading into the net a Seagulls defender hooked it as far as Johnny Wright who flashed his first-time shot agonisingly wide of the left hand post.

The Seagulls went in front on nine minutes when livewire Joe McClennan was given too much room 25 yards out. He let fly from a central position, beating Joe Taylor’s dive to give the hosts the lead.

Parity was restored on 28 minutes, though. Davies found space in the middle of the pitch to thread a thorough ball to Morgan. The Havant & Waterlooville loanee held off the attentions of the Seagulls defenders and nonchalantly placed the ball beyond Purnell.

Kicking into the wind appeared to suit Stones better after the restart and some sharp thinking from Wright, in the 52nd minute, led to the winning goal.

The winger dispossessed a Seagulls midfielder and in turn found Davies. The midfielder took the ball into the box, round keeper Purnell and slotted home from an acute angle.

Weston-super-Mare shaded possession in the second period but the Stones’ midfield and defence didn’t put a foot wrong and keeper Taylor was rarely troubled.

Shaun Lucien replaced Jonny Wright on 78 Minutes and Jefferson Louis replaced Marvin Morgan on 88 minutes.
