A fixture against Whitehawk spawned the Wealdstone Raider and it was the Stones who did the raiding once again on Monday night, sneaking a dramatic draw thanks to substitute Josh Hutchinson's injury time goal.

In an entertaining, enthralling, end-to-end contest, the Stones trailed to a pair of second half goals from the dangerous Danny Mills. Manager Gordon Bartlett rolled the dice, though, and was duly rewarded when one of his two changes, Hutchinson, poked home at the death to sneak a point for the hosts.

Whitehawk enjoyed much of the ball and played an attractive brand of possession-heavy football but struggled to provide much cutting edge.

However, Steve King’s side had the first chance after six minutes when the 6ft 5in Juan Cruz Gotta crashed a header against the crossbar from Sam Deering’s corner.

But after that early warning it was the Stones who took the lead on 18 minutes through the industrious Jonny Wright.

Good link up play down the left-hand side between the industrious Dale Binns and Bradley Hudson-Odoi resulted in the latter crossing for Wright and, after taking an initial swipe at the ball, the wide man tucked beyond Craig Ross at the second attempt.

Left-back Binns was tireless throughout and his lung-busting charge from the edge of his own penalty area to the edge of the Hawks’ was nearly rewarded when Matt Ball picked out Jefferson Louis to lash just wide of the far post.

Louis then turned provider for Elliott Godfrey, laying the ball off for the former Canadian international to drill a rasping left footed effort into the palms of Ross.

Whitehawk’s best chance of the half came three minutes before the break, former Derby County defender Dean Leacock nodding a cross towards the near post where Jonathan North almost dropped the ball over the line.

That chance marked the start of a spell dominance for the Sussex side which continued after the break.

Whitehawk were again denied by North when wing-back Chris Sessegnon ghosted in at the back post only to be denied by the Stones’ number one after 12 minutes of the second period.

Games can turn in an instant and when Ball forced a good save from Ross in the 57th minute, Wealdstone couldn’t have imagined they would be picking the ball out their own net 60 seconds later.

Yet that is exactly what happened as a deft ball clipped into Mills caught the hosts’ backline dozing and allowed the rangy striker to slam beyond a helpless North.

Nine minutes later the Hawks took the lead for the first time with another goal which left boss Bartlett tearing his hair out.

Left-back Craig Braham-Barrett was afforded the space to float in an inviting delivery for Mills and the 6ft 4in striker was left in enough room to crane his neck and steer a header beyond North.

From there Wealdstone huffed and puffed with little joy as Whitehawk’s imposing backline found a way of getting in front of everything.

That was until the fourth minute of injury time when a short corner came in from the right and fell perfectly for Hutchinson to nudge home from the centre of the penalty area to steal a share of the spoils.
