Last week, the latest version of Boris Johnson’s London Plan was approved by the London Assembly.

This is extremely good news for Harrow as it includes a new ‘opportunity area’ for Harrow and Wealdstone, supporting regeneration in the heart of our borough.

It will give Harrow access to millions of pounds of investment for new infrastructure, to support up to 3,000 new jobs and 2,000 new homes. And crucially, it will help Harrow on the Hill Station to finally become step-free — the plans for which were kick-started by our previous Conservative administration.

Thankfully, the plan passed successfully, despite the Labour Assembly members (including Brent and Harrow’s very own Navin Shah) voting against it. Given the obvious advantages, the plan contains for Harrow, it is frankly alarming how close it came to being defeated. In the end, there was only one vote in it, so there was a real risk of everything being sent back to the drawing board. I very much hope that Harrow’s Labour leader Councillor David Perry will reprimand his London colleagues for putting narrow party politics above jobs, homes and investment for Harrow.

Harrow’s residents will expect him to work with — not against — the Mayor of London, to make the most of this important opportunity.
