I am writing to tell your readers about an exciting celebration event taking place at St Margaret’s Church in Edgware this weekend.

October 4 and 5 marks the completion of our Tower Project — a two-year programme of events that began in June 2012 to inform the wider public about the tower’s heritage.

This was the requirement of the Heritage Lottery Fund, which gave a very substantial grant to St Margaret’s for essential repairs to its medieval tower and other essential remedial work for aesthetic, as well safety purposes. The final repairs to the spiral stone staircase leading up to the bell and clock towers have now been completed, as have the final repairs to the 19th Century clock itself, which had not been working for some time. We thought long and hard about what type of celebration to have and then thought, why not say it with flowers?

We are therefore holding a flower festival on Saturday from 10am until 6pm, when not only will St Margaret’s be filled with beautiful flowers on display, but there will also be the chance to have a go at bell-ringing and for the first time, tours of the bell and clock towers.

Soft shoes and flat heels are essential for these tours, which unfortunately do not include the tower roof, although we hope to include this in the future. Refreshments will be on sale and live music will be playing throughout the day.

Our annual harvest service will then take place at 11am on Sunday, which is always enjoyable.

Everyone is welcome to come along, hopefully bringing an item of food that will either be auctioned at the end of the service along with anything which is perishable, or be donated to the food bank at St Peter’s Church in Stonegrove. At 6pm on Sunday, we shall also hold a very special clock consecration service to bless and celebrate the installation of our 19th Century clock, which now has new winding gear, a chime train and a night silencer.
