Pupils from across north London got stuck in to a day of hands-on chemistry last week.
Queen Mary’s University London (QMUL) hosted the Salters' Festival of Chemistry on Wednesday, May 11, with 68 students from 17 schools completing science challenges.
Among the schools were Ashmole Academy in Southgate, Oasis Academy Enfield in Enfield, St. Martha's Senior School in Barnet, The John Lyon School in Harrow, and Watford Grammar School for Girls.
Dr Tippu Sheriff of QMUL said: “We feel honoured to host this showcase of chemistry at the college. I was extremely impressed with all of the students that have taken part in the competition this year and I hope many of them will study chemistry at university and choose careers in scientific research.”
Each school was represented by teams of four pupils aged 11 to 13, who used analytical chemistry and deductive skills to solve the crime “Murder comes to Salterstown”.
The students also saw a demonstration titled “Chemistry is Kool” using liquid nitrogen and dry ice, and took part in “Technician Trouble” which required them to identify five different unknown colourless liquids.
