A 15-year-old who gives up hours of his own time to volunteer with a youth project has been honoured for his commitment.

Daniel Khalid from Barnet has been presented with the Sports and Healthy Living award in the under 25 category at this year’s Team London Awards, organised by the Mayor of London and held at City Hall this week.

Overcoming his own personal challenges, 15-year-old Daniel decided to take positive action to change his life and started volunteering with the Stonegrove Estates Youth Project, based in St Peter’s Community Hall, Edgware.

He started out helping with reception duties but very soon began signing in new members for the junior clubs, explaining the project rules and regulations to parents or carers and is now one of the first faces attendees see every evening.

Daniel also started helping with football sessions and is now the head coach for the under 8s team.

Daniel’s nominator said: “I have more than 32 years of experience in youth work and mentored many junior leaders, but every so often an outstanding volunteer rises from the pack and Daniel is one such character.”

A host of famous faces showed their support for volunteering in the capital by attending this year’s ceremony, which was held to celebrate the outstanding contribution made by Londoners in their communities.

Designer Wayne Hemingway MBE, TV presenter Anneka Rice and footballer Ledley King, were among a horde of celebrities who joined the Mayor Boris Johnson to present awards to the winners.

He said: “The work that Team London volunteers do is central to the success of the capital’s thriving communities.

“Their hard work, innovative ways of helping others and their sheer dedication have helped to make London a cleaner, greener and more inclusive place for everyone. T

“The award nominees should be very proud; they have helped to make a big difference to the lives of their fellow Londoners.”
