Members of the borough’s clinical commissioning group have joined with others in London to improve health services across the capital.
Harrow CCG has joined with seven other groups, including Brent, Central London, Ealing, Hammersmith and Fulham and Hillingdon and have agreed to put money into a central budget.
The shared cash will help deliver the Shaping a Healthier Future programme and help with financing and commissioning primary care services for all eight groups.
The fund of £139m for 2014 to 2015 will mean groups will be able to help one another financially and commission primary care services across borough boundaries.
Dr Ian Goodman, a GP in Hillingdon, said: “These proposals on how we allocate our funding and how we commission primary care will hugely improve our ability to deliver better services for all our patients across a vast area of London.
“As GPs we are all genuinely very excited about this. It reflects how well we as eight CCGs and their chairs can tackle tricky problems to bring about a result that benefits all the patients within north west London.
“We consider that this is perhaps the most important decision we have made, quite simply because it will have a major impact on a quarter of the population of London.”
The group hopes the proposals will enable GPs and the NHS to buy and plan health services more strategically, effectively and sustainably.
