Harrow Labour pledges free parking scheme for the long term

The leader of Harrow Borough Council's Labour group says free parking would be available for the next four years if Labour wins in May’s elections.

Cllr David Perry made the pledge after the council's Conservative administration announced in its budget it would introduce 20-minutes free parking across the borough.

The Tories say they will bring in the scheme as pay and display machines are upgraded over the next three to four months.

But Cllr Perry was keen to stress Labour's attachment to sparing motorists' wallets and supporting shops.

He said: “Over the weekend the Labour Group spoke to over 500 local businesses, as a part of our campaign to support district centres in Harrow.

“We believe that local businesses are essential to the success of Harrow and we have long called for periods of free parking to help local shops and businesses.

“We welcome Cllr Hall’s U-turn, however the Tories do not deserve a pat on the back for this.

“It has taken sustained pressure from the Labour Party, traders and residents to force this U-Turn. Even then, Cllr Hall has not guaranteed the funding long term.

“In contrast, the Labour Group pledge is for a period of free parking will be funded for the next four years, to ensure the long term success of Harrow.”

“however the Tories do not deserve a pat on the back for this”, exactly, because it is short term spending to maximise political gains in May and is also a deflection as she would like the budget increase due to not fully operating the public realm integrated service model (PRISM) to go through!

She has also done this to please 'independent' Labour group who keep her in the elected-mayor style administration!

We suddenly have funds for a borough wide scheme when it was stopped only few months ago by Susan Hall stating that it was found the free parking scheme would cost the authority too much money and was being abused by motorists?

All the political parties are playing to get publicity for May 2014 election after the community has been hoodwinked by Susan Hall with the help of Independent Labour Group.

Just to clarify, we have not done a 'U Turn' I have said loud and clear at every opportunity that we were never against 20 min free parking just the system that was put in place as it was easily abused thus costing the tax payers significant amounts of money. The scheme that we are bringing in will not be able to be abused. As for Labour claiming it was their initiative it was not it was Independent Labour that introduced it and we have modified and enhanced the scheme. That is why Independent Labour supports this. Its odd that Labour are now talking about it. Why did they not bring it in during the three years they were in charge? As for Akhtar and P. Shah commenting, with respect know very little of any of this they are just making themselves heard as they are trying to impress us for the elections. They won't and I am sure that is one thing that all the party's agree on!

A standard Labour policy then.

Susan Hall, you have done a U tern just to hoodwink the community. You have done this once with the help of the Independent Labour Group.

Why not make the free parking scheem everywhere in Harrow and not just on main roads? What about North Harrow where people have to pay 80p to buy a pint of milk?

Stop playing games with lives of the community.

Susie last year you said the council lose an estimated £541,000 a year in pay-and -display income and £310,000 in fines from parking tickets. With the additional cost of upgrading all the ticket machines even though last year you were planning to remove machines to reduce maintenance costs, these figures do not add up. (£4.69 million not the £2 million reported) “it is envisaged that he first machines could be rolled out in early March”
Susie I envisage that this is another bold attempt to solicit votes…

Susie where are you going to find the funds to fill the budget gap this will create?
