HARROW and Brent councils have urged residents to celebrate the cultural contributions of their African and Caribbean communities at a host of events to mark Black History Month this October.

Harrow's event, called Changing Worlds, Changing Minds, kicks off at St George's shopping centre at 2pm on October 1.

The exciting programme features talks, workshops, performances and children's activities reflecting African Caribbean history and culture.

In Brent, there will be a similar mix of colour and culture.

Around 50 events, put on by Brent Council's library service, include storytelling, comedy, poetry, mask making, author readings and discussion forums, all aimed at promoting equality, respect and understanding in one of the most ethnically diverse areas in Britain.

Lead Member for Environment and Culture, Councillor Lesley Jones said: "This year's Black History Month looks bigger and better than ever with what promises to be some fascinating events taking place across the borough. With activities ranging from discussions about racism and football to storytelling and art workshops for children, there promises to be something for everyone of all ages, backgrounds and talents to take part in."

Black History Month was established by Carter G Woodson, editor of the Journal of Negro History, in the USA in 1926.

It was first celebrated in Britain as part of the African Jubilee Year in 1987. It has now grown to more than 1400 UK wide events recognising the contributions and achievements of black people in political, economic and cultural life.
