A CHARITY football tournament featuring a former Tottenham manager raised almost £1,000 yesterday.

Sixteen six-a-side teams, some from as far away as Reading, competed in the Nia Champions League starting at around 1pm at the Hive Football Centre, in Camrose Avenue, Canons Park.

There was music and ex-Spurs boss Peter Shreeves came to watch some of the games and give advice to the players.

Shezmin Madhani, founder of the Nia Children's Foundation, organised the event to raise money for St Monica’s Early Childhood Development Centre, in Kibera, Kenya.

She said: “It went very well, we raised nearly £1,000 which is great. That should feed the school for just under three months.

“Peter came down, he spoke to some of the players and gave them some advice. The players enjoyed it.”

The winning team, named Versatile, were presented with a trophy, medals and bottles of champagne.

The charity pays to provide food for the school, which is not Government run, from local suppliers to encourage children in the area to go to lessons and receive regular meals.

The school was started in 2004 by a group of women living with HIV and Aids.
