CITY workers cast out of a failing bank are being recruited by Harrow Council.

The council has vacancies in a number of departments and wants to tap into the skills of some of the 4,000 Lehman Brothers employees who lost their jobs when the company went bust on Monday.

Councillor Paul Osborn, responsible for performance, communication and corporate services, said: "Many city workers may now, through circumstances not of their making, be looking to switch career.

"What we are saying is that there are strong and exciting career opportunities to be had in local government - we employ 7,500 people with a budget of hundreds of millions, and we actively want top calibre people to work for us.”

He said the council have been forced to employ agency staff but now want to fill empty posts with permanent employees.

It is currently looking for around 25 people in a range of jobs, including for its legal, IT and benefits departments.
