Baby massage classes are now open for mothers wanting to bond with their newborn children.

The sessions, which are run by NCT teachers, go through a sequence of massage techniques which can be completed at home or out and about.

They are intended to improve communication and the relationship between mother and baby, as well as increasing confidence when it comes to handling.

Sarah Miller, a fully-qualified baby massage practitioner, said she wanted to become an instructor to support parents through the early months with their new babies.

“Baby massage is one way of being able to connect with your baby,” she said.

“As an antenatal practitioner, we explore what life might be like in the womb and how we can use this knowledge to help babies and new parents make a gentler transition in the early weeks.

“Babies like the feeling of deep pressure touch, it is a very familiar feeling from life in the womb and this feeling can be very calming for them.

“Equally as important is, while you are massaging your baby, you are giving yourself time and space to communicate with them – through touch, facial expressions, talking and singing.”

Baby massage sessions are also beneficial to those with special needs, or those born prematurely, since they provide a “unique and soothing” way of communication.

The courses, which are available in Pinner, Harrow, start in September and run over four 75-minute sessions in either the morning or the evening.
