A former shop assistant who grew up in Stanmore celebrated her 100th birthday with a visit from the Mayor.

Freda Gladwin, who was born in Dalston but spent her formative years living in Stanmore, received a visit from the Mayor of Harrow, Councillor Nizman Ismail, on Saturday as she celebrated becoming a centenarian.

Mrs Gladwin, who spent 20 years working in the window display department of Leon & Company Ltd, held a party at the Kestrel Grove residential home in Hive Road, where she now lives, to mark the milestone.

Staff said she is an avid reader and her artistic side still shines through with her flower arrangements at the home. She is regularly visited by her niece and nephew.

Cllr Ismail said he wanted to congratulate Mrs Gladwin on her birthday, adding that “it was wonderful to be part of a marvellous occasion”.
