A NEW Kenton centre for people with learning difficulties will move a step closer tomorrow with a ground-breaking ceremony.

The John Billam Community Resource Centre, which is being built in the playing fields in Woodcock Hill, Kenton, will provide a support base for those with disabilities and also be available for hire by the community.

Work on the two-storey building will commence tomorrow afternoon, when those who will use the centre will ceremonially break ground to mark the start of construction.

Councillor Ruth Moher, Brent Council's cabinet member for adults and health, said: “This is a long way from the institutions that we have been used to and promotes independence rather than dependence.

“Most people will not stay at John Billam all day, but will meet there to go out and do what everyone else does, taking into account their own capabilities and needs.

“This might include working, paid or unpaid, or simply going to the park or a swimming pool with a support worker.”

The building will cater for 60 people and includes a café, treatment rooms, a sensory garden and a landscaped outdoor area, while in the evenings the centre will be available for community clubs and meetings.

The centre is expected to open next summer.
