AN off licence is under investigation after an industrial solvent used in windscreen de-icer was found in bottles of booze.

The entire stock of Drop Vodka at the store was seized by Trading Standards officers after one customer said the dodgy spirit had left them feeling ill.

Tests on the bottles found every 100ml contained 2g of industrial solvent Propan-2-ol used in aerosol windscreen de-icers and in diluted form in car washer bottles.

Trading standards are not releasing the name of the store while the investigation is ongoing.

Richard Thake, responsible for community safety at Hertfordshire Trading Standards, said: "Members of the public should not buy this illicit product.

“Although the product sampled was not deemed to be injurious to health, it can be safely assumed that such spirits are not subject to rigorous quality control systems.

“Therefore you are taking a big risk if you consume this drink, as there is no telling exactly what it contains.

"Traders may think they are getting a good deal by buying this vodka on the cheap, but they should know that they are committing offences by selling it."

Trading standards have appealed for information, which can be given by contacting Consumer Direct on 08454 040506.
