THE charity behind plans for the country's first state-funded Hindu school has dropped Pinner Park Farm as a possible site.

The move was revealed on Tuesday after strong public opposition to building of greenfield land off George V Avenue.

A consultation process was run in May and June Now, the I-Foundation says it has identified an alternative site on the other side of the borough, the William Ellis Sports Ground of Camrose Avenue, Edgware.

And it has launched another period of consultation, which will close on September 24.

Two public exhibitions on the revised scheme are to be held.

These will be on from noon to 6pm on Wednesday (September 20) at St Anthony's Catholic Social Club on the corner of Edgware High Street and Garratt Road, Edgware, and from 9.30am to 5pm on Saturday, September 23, at Canons High School in Shaldon Road, Canons Park The exhibitions will be staffed during these times so that the public can ask questions.

If it gets the go-ahead, the Krishna-Avanti Primary School will be established as a one-form entry mixed primary school with attached nursery.

The charity hopes it will be open by September 2008, and will fill on a year-by-year basis to minimise the impact on other primary schools.

At present, there is no Hindu voluntary aided school in the UK and the I-Foundation believes that Hindu organisations are keen for such a school to be established in Harrow, to offer more choice to the borough's Hindu community.

A fifth of the borough's residents are Hindu, the highest percentage for any local authority area in the country.

Harrow has ten voluntary aided religious schools, eight of which are primary schools.

There are eight Roman Catholic schools, one Church of England school, and a Jewish school.
