Far right English Defence League (EDL) to protest outside Harrow Council over Halal school menus

A FAR right group that backed last year's Harrow mosque protests looks set to demonstrate in the borough over Halal school menus.

The English Defence League (EDL) has fought repeated street battles with Unite Against Fascism (UAF) in cities like Birmingham, Bradford and Bolton, and the two groups look set to meet in Harrow in January.

The organisation, which says it wants a peaceful protest, is demonstrating against Halal only meat menus in the borough's schools, an issue that has already proved divisive among residents locally.

A statement on a Facebook event created by the group reads: “The English Defence League is against the inhumane slaughter of animals to produce Halal meat.

“The English Defence League is also against the rituals of Islam being forced upon our next generation without choice.”

UAF already look likely to hold a counter-demonstration and the Brent and Harrow branch has emailed supporters warning them of the date.

The email states: “If they decide to go ahead with this lunatic scheme, we will mobilise against them.

“They must not be able to invade our borough unopposed. We defend our children's right to be served food in school that meets their dietary needs whether these needs are medical or religious.

“Parents should be confident that their children will be served healthy food that meets their needs and beliefs.”

EDL supported two protests organised by another group, SIOE, against Harrow Central Mosque last year – one on September 11, the anniversary of the terror attacks in America, and one on December 13.

On both occasions anti-mosque protesters were dwarfed by their anti-fascist rivals and mocked with chants of “there are many, many more of us than you”.

But the threat to protest outside Harrow Civic Centre, in Station Road, on Saturday, January 15, between 2pm and 4pm, is likely to bring a return of fears for the unity of one of the country's most religiously and culturally diverse areas.

Harrow Council says it has no say over what menus are offered in school canteens and has written to all headteachers in the borough asking them to take into account the needs of all faith groups.

But the authority's headquarters has been chosen as the target of the EDL protest anyway, and the location has added significance since it is opposite Harrow Central Mosque.

At the time of publication, 154 people had accepted invitations to the EDL Facebook event.

To be perfectly honest i dont want halal only food on offer to schools etc but i dont want the morons from the EDL coming here or the UAF to "mobilise" this is Harrow not a battleground for groups to scream at each other we have parliment to do that for us so EDL stay in luton in your pubs and UAF stay out of Harrow WE DONT WANT YOU!

storm in a teacup?

Why cant the industry label all meat regardless any way so parents and pupils can choose for themselves? be it Halal, Kosher, Non religious slaughter etc?

Is it not up to Head of schools now whether to take on board Council's advice or not?

Every oen should have a choice and options and the Heads of School should seriously consider this now.

In 50 years time Islam will be the dominant religion and culture in this country, laws will change, gettos will be created and Halal animals will still be having their throats slashed.
might as well get used to it now.

The problem of non-halal meat in schools needs to be resolved quickly. It gives an excuse for right wing factions and the left wingers to fight each other over this issue in our Borough.

When will the so called "unite against fascism" stand up for the rights of non muslims who don't want to eat halal and want to eat pork? People are sick and tired of having the islamic culture forced on us and the edl is the result

surfnutt and roger_1 make good points. I don't care for the EDL, but by the same token: *my* religion allows me to eat pork, but is more ambivalent about halal meat. I do not buy it or eat it, and would resent being forced to.

Its not an easy matter to resolve, If the majority of children in a school is muslim , how can anyone justify not having halal meat as the meat of choice?. If the majority of pupil in school are non muslim then how can anyone justify having halal meat as the main choice?. It is arrogant to say we in England always had it this way and that way ect. As history shows, we had racist views as a nation till very recent where it was proven to be in humane way for us to treat eachother. It is an attack on civil liberty that a school with a majority of non muslim pupils make halal meat as the only source, in the equal view. It is an attack on civil liberty that a school with majority of muslim pupils make halal meat no a choice ( this is the same for other religions ie kosher ect.) FYI muslims can eat kosher meat, btw i am not a muslim but have muslim friends. So for anyone to blinded comment on a subject without on the ground information is serving their own interest. I am sure the headteachers are best placed to make the right choice for that school, you trust and see them helping your child achieve good grades why not trust them with choices based on their school eating habits?. I welcome any positive comments to enrich this conversation, nasty comments are a waste of my time and yours.

The best solution is to eradicate all religion to allow us to achieve true enlightenment from education and science. Hopefully one day we will be able to explore the stars together and create extra-terrestrial colonies in the furthest depths of space.

1st protest i was angry and hyped up i couldn't even go to sleep because of the adrenalin coursing through my veins . I went to the protest ,left before it kicked off, not good but the message was sent to not **** with us.

2nd protest still fairly hyped ,went do protest, pathetic protest by the edl/sioe again ,cold , bored , went home, no story.

3rd protest don't no what to make of it. If they threat me in any way I flip out so im just going to avoid them. Inshallah (god willing) there will be major incident against non edl people (intelligent general public) .If the police want to go hard on them(edl) then them thats fine by me.

The EDL would be better at getting the halal being fed to non muslims issue out in the open, if they did not just choose the Harrow Schools issue to make their point.
This goes on at such institutions as Wembley Stadium (owned by the FA?), Twickenham Stadium, Hospitals & Schools all over the place.
It really needs a major demonstration/march, not just football fans who only ever end up being on the recieving end of anti-fasist louts & the resulting media coverage.
Halal should (as with Kosher) only be available in Halal shops/eateries. That way, if you want Halal, you can choose to buy/eat it.

@_AK_786 - You should not be allowed to comment until you have learnt to construct a proper sentence. Inshallah (god willing).

I agree with Wayward Son. Instead of scoffing at the comments you should seriously contemplate getting an education.

You may not agree with the various comments but how is sneering going to help a reasoned debate about this difficult situation?
