TRADE union members protested in Harrow against Government cuts today.

Members of Unison are campaigning against Lib Dem/Tory plans to slash public spending on local Government and gathered at Harrow Civic Centre, in Station Road, at around 12.30pm.

Gary Martin, Harrow branch secretary, said: “We are protecting jobs because they provide public services for the most vulnerable in Harrow and further cuts are going to impact on residents.

“I'm extremely worried. It seems that the right wing of the coalition Government is taking the opportunity to seriously impact on the public sector.

“The coalition Government have made it quite clear that they like the private sector but as we have seen in Harrow it doesn't always work.”

The protesters are now on their way into central London to join other unions for a rally at the TUC building in Great Russell Street, central London.

Linda Perks, Unison regional secretary, said: “Before the election we were told that the most vulnerable and front line services would be protected – that promise didn’t last long.

“There are other ways to reduce the deficit that don’t include these unnecessary cuts to public services.

“The economic crisis is simply an excuse for the Coalition Government to implement their Tory policies of attacking public services, protecting the rich and attacking the poor just to boost the profits of big business.”

The coalition Government blame Labour's handling of the economy for levels of debt and say money must be paid back urgently in order to shore up the economy.
