HARROW residents sipped and munched their way through enough coffee and cake to raise more than £1,000 for charity.

Macmillan Cancer Support's annual World's Largest Coffee Morning brought the borough together on Friday through a series of events.

Around 130 residents and Harrow Council staff raised £912 at Harrow Civic Centre, where there was a raffle in addition to the refreshments.

Money raised will be split between Macmillan and Harrow mayor Councillor Asad Omar's chosen charity Ovarian Cancer Action.

Mary Mullane, an organiser, said: “It was great to see so many people there to show their support for these good causes.

“I’m so grateful to them and all the local businesses that donated food and drinks – it means every penny raised will go to the charities.”

Another coffee morning was organised by Pinner Association of Churches at Saint Luke's Church Hall, in Love Lane, where more than 100 people raised more than £400.

Rachael and Chris Hull invited residents into their Anglesmere Crescent home, in North Harrow, and raised £150 in donations.

Frank Leonhardt, of Birchmead Avenue, who went to the events, said: “I think everyone enjoyed it. What's not to enjoy when there's coffee and cake around?

“It's a good excuse to get together and raise money at the same time.”
