JEWISH and Muslim communities are joining forces in an effort to help the Pakistan flood victims, with a special theatre performance.

Former Edgware resident, Dr Eva Schloss, who is an Auschwitz survivor and step-sister of Anne Frank, announced on Monday that a special performance of James Still's award-winning play, And Then They Came For Me - Remembering The World Of Anne Frank, will take place in aid of the Disasters Emergency Committee appeal. The play wil be performed on October 18 at the Lyric Theatre, London.

Talks are also underway for a performance of the play at Harrow Mosque.

Dr Schloss, who ran an antiques shop in Edgware from 1972 to 1997 and now lives in St John's Wood, said: “Many people were saved from the tragedy of the Holocaust through the action of others. A major tragedy is now unfolding in Pakistan with over 14 million people affected by the floods. There is much we can do to help them.

"The play will hopefully show people that we need to pull together and help. The relationship between Muslim and Jewish people isn't always too good, so if we use this play to help Muslim people, this could bring them together.”

Producer and director of the play, Nic Careem, said: “We're hoping to show people in the UK and around the world that when it comes to humanity, we all have to unite or else we'll all suffer. We need to do more things like this if we're to repair the damage done. If we can get people to open their hearts as a result of what we're doing, then that would be great.”

The initiative is being supported by John Bird, founder of the Big Issue. Mr Bird said: "We need to rally around the 20 million broken, homeless, dejected people of Pakistan and not only bring them relief but get them back on their feet too.

"I'm an ex-Catholic, Nic is Muslim, Eva is Jewish and we're in this together – so essentially, it's not about who is your God, but who will help."

And Then They Came For Me is a multimedia play that combines videotaped interviews with Holocaust survivors Ed Silverberg and Dr Schloss, with live actors recreating scenes from their lives during the Second World War.
