FRESH plans have been unveiled for a large community centre in North Harrow.

The Battlers Well Foundation has returned with its new designs for the North Harrow Community Centre, in Station Road, after its last attempt was knocked back by Harrow Council.

The Muslim charity wants to redevelop the site of the North Harrow Assembly Halls with a centre encompassing a library, gym, sports and community halls, and a prayer area.

Councillors previously objected to the size of the scheme, and argued it was not in keeping with the rest of North Harrow.

At the time, planning supremo Councillor Marilyn Ashton said it was “with regret” that the charity's hard work had not been successful, and now-council leader Bill Stephenson commented that the site was in need of development.

Some local residents have argued against the plans because they believe they are for an Islamic centre, but the charity has always maintained it would be a multi-faith venue.

The charity has been holding informal consultation meetings with residents over the plans ahead of submitting them to the council for planning permission.
