A BUSINESSMAN who murdered his wife to stop her running away with another man has been jailed for life.

Mark Campbell, 53, stabbed Olga Pleguezuelos in the back of the head, face and neck just days before she was due to start a new life in Las Vegas.

He was sentenced to 14 years by a judge at the Old Bailey today.

Following the murder, Campbell then spent hours investigating ways of committing suicide before laying down next to her and cutting open his wrists and throat, on October 19.

He then called his brother to confess before ringing 999 and telling the police operator: “She told me she had been with other men while she was away.

“We had a lovely weekend, this evening we had a fight and I am so upset. We took in the theatre in London in the evening, I tried and I lost it. I grabbed a pillow and just put it on her face.

“On the side of the bed I have a little knife. She was struggling and I pushed it and that was it. I cannot remember all the things, she just died in my arms and I tried to kill myself.”

Mrs Pleguezuelos had returned from Las Vegas just before moving there for good and Campbell prepared their marital home for her return, decorating it with love hearts.

He broke down in the dock when shown a photograph of the luxurious Elmfield Close flat, and had to be led, sobbing down to the dock.

In a diary entry for October 11, 2009, Olga said: “My life has changed. I feel lucky. I have turned my life around.

“Going to work in Vegas, I'm enjoying this job. I have a lot of confidence. I have a fit body, I am beautiful. I have everything, I feel alive.

“I am leaving Mark. I love him but I'm not in love with him. I want to continue my life in my way.”
