A PINNER school is running a “park and stride” scheme to encourage parents to walk at least part of their journey this week.

St John Fisher Catholic Primary School, in Melrose Road, has set up a meeting point in Cambridge Road car park, where mothers and fathers can drop off their children with teachers.

Pupils will then walk the rest of the way in a group, allowing them to get more exercise and see the streets around their area.

Harrow Council is urging parents across the borough to walk, instead of driving, for as much of the journey as possible.

Robert Agutter, travel planning officer at Harrow Council, said: “Daily exercise is key in fighting childhood obesity and walking to school is one of the easiest and best ways to make it part of your child’s routine.

“While we would encourage all parents to leave their cars at home for the school run it’s simply not an option for everyone, and that’s why we are promoting the park and stride option.

“The health benefits are clear but children learn other skills too, such as road safety, independence and a better knowledge of their local area.”
