DRACONIAN parking restrictions in Lea Bridge Road are ruining trade, say local shopkeepers.

Mandatory fines of £100 to drivers who park on the red route mean businesses are suffering needlessly, claims Ahmet Dogan.

He and other shopkeepers have collected a petition of more than 100 names protesting against the parking rules which will be sent to the council.

“It is a ridiculous situation for everyone,” he said.

“Some of our customers are old vulnerable people.

“They are only there for five to ten minutes and they get a ticket, or cameras spot them and they are sent a fine for £100 and they don’t come back again.

“It is pointless. During the day there is no traffic.

“Shops are having to close because of it.

“The council is happy to take our money in business rates but they give us nothing back.

They need a clear policy to help us out.” But the council says its hands were tied as the restrictions were imposed by Transport for London (TfL).

A council spokesman said: “Lea Bridge Road is an important route into London and is part of the London Bus Networks Priority Routes scheme. The parking restrictions were introduced by TfL to improve bus reliability and encourage more people on to public transport on the route.

“TfL consulted local businesses before restrictions were put in place.

“The council has created short-term parking bays in a number of the side roads along Lea Bridge Road to provide parking for shoppers.

“Many of the roads do not have any parking restrictions and provide ample parking space.” Fines paid within 28 days are discounted to £50, the council added.

Local businesses who would like to discuss the option of short-term parking bays off Lea Bridge Road can contact the council’s traffic and development team on 8496 3000.
