A TRAIN company has performed a u-turn on paying staff on Sundays after last week's cancellation of services.

London Midland was forced to cancel all train services but one on Sunday, September 6, including trains which pass through Harrow and Wealdstone to Euston, after it scrapped overtime payments for staff.

Not enough workers volunteered to come to work, and the firm was heavily criticised when the trains were cancelled.

London Midland bosses today said they were reinstating the overtime payments on Sundays “for an extended period” to try to formulate a new strategy for Sunday working.

However, it is not yet clear how long this new situation will last.

The u-turn comes after emergency discussions between London Midland bosses, staff representatives, and trade union chiefs.

In a statement issued this morning, London Midland tried to reassure passengers that future services would be unaffected.

It said: “We will continue to offer enhanced overtime payments for drivers and conductors working Sunday shifts.

“This is again for a time-limited period and we will be continuing to seek a longer term solution, as we have already been doing, as well as ensuring that we continue to offer passengers improvements to the performance and reliability of London Midland services across the week.

“We apologise for the disruption to services on September 6. London Midland fully understands the need to be able to offer our passengers a robust and reliable Sunday service in the future."
