TWO Kingsbury men are among six arrested for violence during demonstrations against the Israeli incursion into Gaza.

As thousands of protesters turned out to show their feelings about the conflict in two separate marches in January, police say they were attacked and some shop windows were smashed.

Officers are still hunting the people they believe were responsible and of the six arrested this morning a 23-year-old and a 25-year-old were from the NW9 area.

The rest were from other parts of west London.

Chief Superintendent Ian Thomas, of the Met’s Public Order Branch, said: “What happened during these demonstrations in January and what our officers and those shop keepers were subjected to was not and cannot be described as lawful protest.

“A small minority of people set out that day not to air their views but to fight police and cause damage.

“I have no doubt that a small hardcore acted as antagonists during the demonstrations, stirring up the crowd.”

His operation, codenamed Ute, has already seen 62 people arrested and released on bail, while police hunt another 40.

During the first protest, on January 3, crowds of people, police say around 12,000, marched from Embankment to Trafalgar Square.

Officer say 2,000 broke off, making their way towards the Israeli embassy, in Kensington, and claim some tried to break through police lines.

They say demonstrators threw objects at them, including fireworks.

On January 10, police say they faced a three hour barrage outside the embassy, with some of the 15,000 to 20,000 protesters throwing barriers, sticks and stones.

Four shop windows were smashed and Starbucks was looted. Officers say people threw the stolen goods at their lines.

One policeman was knocked unconscious during the bombardment.

Chief Superintendent Thomas said: "Let me make it clear that those who corrupt and abuse the right to protest by using it as a guise to attack police and trash and loot shops cannot hide behind the crowds.

“After the demonstration is over and the crowds have left police will start working to identify those responsible, and when we do we will arrest you.

“The right to protest is an important one and should not be undermined by thugs and louts who simply want to cause trouble.”

Police have released pictures of three people they are still hunting in connection with the violence.
