A “FIT and active” pensioner was killed for a Primark umbrella and an extension lead in a violent robbery last night.

A robber dragged 81-year-old Molly Morgan to the ground and snatched a brown plastic shopping bag from her shoulder, leaving her with injuries she would later die from.

The Queensbury woman was on her way to help out at a Workers Education Society lecture at Kenton Library when she was attacked and left for dead.

She was found on the ground in Streatfield Road at around 7.40pm last night by neighbours who called paramedics to take her to hospital.

However, the injuries to the left side of her body and head proved to be too serious, and she died just before 4am this morning.

Detective Chief Inspector Jessica Wadsworth, who is leading the hunt for the killer, condemned the actions which led to Mrs Morgan's death.

She said: “The appalling thing about this tragedy is it really was for nothing.

“Mrs Morgan was a lively member of the local community, she had so much going for her in her life, so this is just a despicable crime.

“Her daughter has said she was a wonderful mother, fit and active with so much life in front of her.”

Mrs Morgan had lived in the local area for more than 50 years, and was a well known and active member of local organisations.

She sat on the London committee of the Workers Education Association, and was a member of the Royal Horticultural Society, keeping an allotment in Harrow in her spare time.

She trained as an architect before becoming a full-time mother to her daughter, who now lives in Surrey.

Police are still gathering evidence and information about the robbery, but believe at this stage Mrs Morgan may have missed her bus to get to the lecture on time, and had decided to walk the short distance instead.

They are appealing for any witnesses who may have been in Streatfield Road, a main road through Kenton, to come forward.

They are also keen to retrieve the stolen bag, and asked people to call DCI Wadsworth on 0208 358 0300, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
