A historic day across the globe, as the US woke up on the morning of Tuesday the 4th November to the first African American leader, a sight DR. King himself would have been proud of. However, it seemed that John McCain thought otherwise, as loyal state after state turned against him in favour of ‘Obama brand’ democracy, leaving him wondering what could have been, as the three course meal of defeat served its starter. By dessert McCain was full. The taste of betrayal from his Republican supporters, was fresh is his mouth, as he sheepishly smiled at what was left of his meal.

Across the pond, Gordon Brown woke up to a new ally to ‘aid’ in the current economic crisis, the war on terrorism and the struggle in the Middle East.

Students around the UK shared an optimistic view as it was recognised that Obama would finish what Bush started.

With a week to reflect upon the outcome of the election, the dust has begun to settle, and we have all realised that colour is not the main factor when it comes to running the most powerful nation on Earth. Of course, every move he makes will be cross-examined and dissected by the media and the hopes, of not just America, but countries across the world cling on to his broad shoulders.

Here in Britain, the effect of his policies will be particularly visible as he hopes to slowly withdraw American troops from their own war, leaving our loved ones fighting for a cause they did not start.

Remembrance Day was a sobering reminder of the lives lost throughout history for the freedom which some take for granted. Even today, our troops are risking their lives and it hits harder when someone we know is fighting to preserve what we hold so dear.

As Obama accepted the gauntlet of becoming an iconic American President, in Britain we turn our eyes to our own leaders and sources of inspiration; be at our places of work, in our schools or even within our own households.

Questions and judgements are formed as we begin to compare our own lifestyles to those of our American cousins; from the way our country is run, right down to the latest YouTube craze. The impact America has on us is beyond measure as we are influenced by whatever trend is coming from across the Atlantic.

Even now, across the world Obama’s ideology is being emulated by world leaders. YouTube played a key role in the American President’s election- now leaders from around the world are jumping into the technological bandwagon to try and steal some ‘Obama-magic’.

The world anxiously awaits the steps Obama is going to take. The road ahead is hazy, but the President is a beacon which shall light the way forward.

At least he can rest assured that he won’t be as bad as the last guy!
