Young emerging musicians from Croydon were met with a moment of international stardom while representing the UK on June 14.

As part of the New Media Edge project, nine performance artists, aged between 17 and 25, travelled to the Danish city of Ballerup to join young musicians from three European cities.

Rehearsing for 12 to 14 hours a day the students overcame cultural barriers to put on a fantastic performance.

Jordan Xavier, keyboard player for Croydon’s team, said: “I was so glad to be there, I love making the music, but it was really good to be able to meet with all the other musicians and get to know them.” The performance was a mix of differing styles of music, combining classical with contemporary, scratching with strings, and received rapturous applause.

The three cities involved – chosen because of their location on the edge of large capitals – were Nacka from Sweden, Ballerup from Denmark, Kifissia from Greece and Croydon representing the United Kingdom. Together the four teams had been working for a year to produce a co-operative musical experience showcasing young European talent.

The performance was opened by the Mayor of Ballerup and viewers back in the home towns could watch the performance live on the internet.

The mayor said: “The New Media Edge project has been excellent. The performance was very good, I thought the Croydon singers sang very well.”
