Watching various sports is a massively popular pastime for millions of people around the world. If afforded the opportunity, many fans flock to stadiums to watch their favourite teams in action live instead of on television.

With that, has come the need for mega stadiums that are able to house 10s of 1000s of fans at a time. There are some very impressive structures for this dotted around the world. The bulk have been expensive to build and maintain.

California's crown jewel

In Inglewood, California, in the United States of America, there's Sofi Stadium. It's home to the Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams in the National Football League (NFL). The had a total construction cost of $5.5 billion and opened in 2020.

Staying with the NFL, there's also the MetLife Stadium - home to New York Jets and New York Giants. It is based in East Rutherford, New Jersey, USA. It's construction cost was $1.7 billion, but with inflation, that escalated to $2.03 billion.

Football fanaticism

Moving from the States to the United Kingdom, Wembley Stadium is England's pride and joy - and home to the men's and women's national team. It's in London and cost £798 million to build. Many fans who bet on sports online with Lottoland UK flock to Wembley Stadium when there is a chance to see England's football teams playing live.

MLB behemoth

Fans of Major League Baseball could be interested to know that Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York, is the most expensive MLB stadium to date. This cost $1.5 billion to build as well. The New York Yankees share the ground with New York City Football Club in the Major League Soccer.

Counting on the Cowboys

Back in 2009, AT&T Stadium was opened for the Dallas Cowboys. Another NFL stadium of huge proportions, it is located in Arlington, Texas, and cost an estimated $1.3 billion to complete.

Spurs' stash

The English Premier League is hugely popular among football fans in the United Kingdom. The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is in London and was completed in 2019 for a cost of $1.3 billion.

NBA highlight

Checking back in with big-brand American sports, consider Barclays Center and its expense. It is home to the Brookyln Nets in the National Basketball Association. It was completed in 2012 and cost $1 billion to build. 

Over in Australia

For the most expensive multi-sport stadium in Australia, look no further than Optus Stadium in Perth. Completed in 2017 for a cost of $1.2 billion. It hosts four cricket teams:

  • Australian in Test, ODI and T20I cricket;
  • Western Australia in state competition;
  • Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League; and
  • Perth Scorchers Women in the Women's Big Bash League.
  • Optus Stadium is also home to the West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Dockers in the Australian Football League.
