A GROUP of local Labour Party politicians kickstarted its efforts to build a school in Bangladesh with a fundraising dinner.

Held yesterday (Sunday), it was in aid of victims of a cyclone, which devastated parts of the South Asian country in November last year.

The Harrow Council Labour group, with a host of community groups including the Harrow Bengali Association, is hoping to raise £30,000 to build the school which can double as an emergency shelter during times of disaster.

Navin Shah, leader of the Labour Group, is spearheading the fundraising efforts.

He said: "The Harrow community has a tremendous tradition of coming together when there is disaster.

"I am proud and grateful to the people who are supporting this and, God willing, this is one project that will happen."

The event was held at the Zoroastrian Centre, in Alexandra Avenue, Rayners Lane.

Guests from across London, including Brent and Harrow Councillors, the Mayor of Waltham Forest, Gareth Thomas, MP for Harrow West, and Robert Evans, MEP for Harrow, were entertained by traditional dancing and singing from local community groups.

Mr Evans, who visited Bangladesh soon after Cyclone Sidr struck last year, said: "To see bodies that were being counted and lives that have been destroyed will stay in my memory for a long time.

"This is a tremendous community effort, with people from all backgrounds recognising that this is a country in need, which will still need your help and support in the future even when there are other disasters in other countries."

The fundraising committee has already raised £1,500, including a £500 donation presented yesterday (Sunday) by Pick and Save, in Kenton Road, Kenton.

The group has set a target of six months to raise the money needed to build the school.
