A LOCAL politician has welcomed a report calling for compulsory physical education in schools.
The European Union today (Monday, January 14) demanded at least three physical education lessons a week for all state school pupils across Europe, and more integration between sport and academic subjects.
Robert Evans, MEP for Harrow, said sports funding in schools was vital to tackle the problem of childhood obesity.
He said: "Physical education is the only school subject that seeks to prepare children for a healthy lifestyle and focuses on their physical and mental development. It is absolutely vital."
This morning, Mr Evans will mark the report's release by playing sport with pupils from Harrow High School, in Gayton Road, Harrow.
