An air museum will celebrate 100 years of service by welcoming a centenary baton that marks the ‘tremendous contribution’ made by its forces.

Bentley Priory Museum in Stanmore will receive the baton relay team at 11.30am on April 2 to commemorate the creation of the RAF in April 1918.

The specially designed baton will begin its relay on April 1, precisely 100 years to the day since the Royal Air Force was founded, travelling to 100 sites with the RAF over 100 days.

The visit to Bentley Priory Museum is significant because it acknowledges the role RAF Bentley Priory played as Headquarters Fighter Command in the 1940 Battle of Britain.

RAF 100 project officer, Chloe Marley of Bentley Priory Museum, said: “The museum is delighted to be part of this special event.

“The RAF left the site 10 years ago so it’s wonderful that Bentley Priory is still recognised for its tremendous contribution to the defence of the country during the Battle of Britain.”

Visitors who join the museum in their celebrations will receive a commemorative baton to keep.

Attending the celebration will be Mayor of Harrow, Cllr Margaret Davine, Harrow East MP, Bob Blackman, Squadron 2473 air cadets and the Tonic Choir who will give a brief choral performance.
