St Albans people have only one week left to register to vote.

The General Election will take place on Thursday June 8 with two seats in the St Albans District to be contested: Hitchin and Harpenden.

Those who want to have a say at the General Election have until midnight on Monday May 22 to register. Only those on the electoral register are eligible to vote.

People who are already registered not need to do so again and will receive a poll card in the post.

Michael Lovelady, electoral registration officer for St Albans District Council, said: “The General Election registration deadline is fast approaching.

“This election is an opportunity to say who you want to represent you at a national level. We don’t want anyone to miss out on this opportunity.”

Emma Hartley, head of campaigns at the Electoral Commission, reminded people who have moved recently to make sure they are registered.

She said: “Our research indicates that recent home movers in particular are less likely to be registered to vote.

“Often people think that applying to pay council tax means you are added to the electoral register too, but that is not the case.”

Anyone not registered to vote at their current address can do so in only a few minutes online at www.gov.uk/registertovote

For those residents who do not wish to register online, a paper copy of the registration form is available. It can be obtained from the local registration office by email on elections@stalbans.gov.uk or by phone on 01727 819294.

If you will be unable to cast your vote in person on 8 June, you can apply for a postal or proxy vote. The deadline to apply to vote by post is 5pm on Tuesday May 23.
