A synagogue will hold a Romanian- themed Holocaust commemoration.

Speeches will be made by Romanian Holocaust survivor Leslie Kleinman and the Romanian Ambassador at Pinner Synagogue’s Yom HaShoah event, on Sunday, April 23 at 7.15pm.

Other guests will include the Mayor of Harrow, local councillors and diplomats from other embassies, as well as a performance by Pinner Youth, who will speak about the late Ellie Wiesel, a Romanian-born American Jewish writer.

Leslie was the second oldest of eight children but the only family member to survive the Holocaust.

In January 1945, he was sent on a number of death marches but was finally liberated in April aged 15 after a Jewish American soldier found him in a collapsed state in a fox hole and took him to hospital.

He then spent six months recuperating in a monastery and will now be sharing his “horrifying” story.

Stephen Collins, a member of the synagogue, said: “This year’s Holocaust commemoration at Pinner Synagogue has a Romanian theme, with speeches by Romanian Holocaust survivor Leslie Kleinman and the Romanian Ambassador

“It is especially appropriate following the death last year of Romanian-born Nobel Prize Winner Elie Wiesel and among others attending will be the Mayor, local councillors and diplomats from other Embassies. All are welcome.”
