A Harrow MP is calling on the Prime Minister to help fix the £21m worth of 'high risk' work needed at Northwick Hospital.

Research by the Labour Party Health Team has revealed that the backlog of NHS maintenance has increased over the past year.

The estimated costs to fix the backlog of “high risk” maintenance work at Northwick Park Hospital in Harrow is £21,488,929.

The ‘high risk’ maintenance is categorised as an urgent priority in order to prevent ‘catastrophic failure’ and ‘serious injury’.

The hospital has the fifth largest backlog of urgent repairs in England.

Labour MP for Harrow West, Gareth Thomas, said the figures show the reality of the state of the NHS.

Mr Thomas said: “Hospitals are so starved of funds that even the most high risk repairs which could cause ‘catastrophic failure’ and ‘serious injury’ are being left undone.

“The Government is letting our NHS and patients down by this underfunding.

"Northwick Park has the fifth highest backlog of urgent maintenance work, at a time when Harrow has received the lowest level of funding per head for the NHS of any London borough.

"It’s time Theresa May did something about it.”

Investment to solve the backlog of ‘significant risk’ maintenance stands at £10.5m. To complete all ‘moderate risk’ and ‘low risk’ maintenance would cost £72.9m.

In England, the total backlog has risen from £4.3bn last year to nearly £5bn this year, with the ‘high-risk’ maintenance backlog having increased to 69.3 per cent in a year from £458m last year to £775.5m this year.
