Care home residents in Kenton welcomed some very special guests to their home recently as they received a table tennis table to combat Alzheimer’s disease.

BBC Radio 4 sports presenter Rob Bonnet was joined by Mayor of Harrow Rekha Shah and Mayor of Brent Parvez Ahmed at Birchwood Grange Care Home on Preston Hill.

Donated by BAT (Bounce Alzheimer’s Therapy), who believe regular physical activity helps combat the disease, it is hoped the table will provide an effective and fun treatment for symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

The donated table was unveiled to delighted residents by the two civic leaders, who were both keen to christen the table with a friendly game of ping pong.

The table was donated in recognition of the support residents from Birchwood Grange have given to the research and development of a table suitable for those living with the disease, which saw residents Anne Ingram and Roger Spicer spend the day testing the new table at The Alzheimer's Show this year.

Sport features prominently at Birchwood Grange, and the care home has also introduced netball to the residents as a way of increasing mobility and hand-eye coordination.
