One of Harrow’s biggest car parks will close for good at the end of the month.

The 300-space Gayton Road car park is set to drop its barriers for the final time at 6.30pm on Monday, August 29.

Harrow Council confirmed the space, which is located within walking distance of Harrow-on-the-Hill train station, was in the process of being sold but could give no further details as negotiations over the sale were ongoing.

Sources suggest the land will be developed into housing, although this has not been certified.

One concerned resident who has lived in the area for 70 years said: “It’s a disaster for people who want to go shopping in Harrow. Members of the public and visitors have difficulty parking already.

“The car park is often very busy, especially around Christmas. Where are those 300 cars going to go?”

To compound the difficulty, many nearby spaces around St Johns Road and Lyon Road are currently suspended because of building works.

The council said car owners with permits for the Gayton Road facility will be able to leave their vehicles in the Davy House car park on Lyon Road instead.

However this alternative car park has less than 100 spaces and sits under Platinum House, meaning many spaces are currently used by residents.

Parking alternatives suggested by the council for non-permit holders include the 446-space Queens House facility near St Ann’s Shopping Centre, and the Vaughan Road car park, which has fewer than 50 spaces. Both are priced at £4.20 a day.
