THE leader of Harrow Council is to step down from the role to “begin a new chapter”.

Labour’s David Perry has led the authority for two years but will be handing over the top job after the council’s annual meeting on May 19.

He was elected to represent Malborough ward in 2006 and will not step down as councillor.

Cllr Perry said: “Harrow is my home and it has been the proudest two years of my life to lead this great borough and serve its residents.

“After five years of front-bench politics, in various roles, it is also the right time for me personally to begin a new chapter in my life.

“I want to pay tribute to Harrow Council’s amazing staff. The way they have dealt with adversity and risen to the challenges put before them is a testament to their dedication and professionalism.

“Growing up in Harrow, I always wanted to make a difference for the places and people of this borough.

“I will always be passionate about giving back to my community.”

He says he has managed to protect services people “cherish”, but came under fire for slashing £250,000 from mental health community centre The Bridge and dozens of other public services.

Cllr Perry added: “I’m proud that my administration has not just protected services that our residents cherish, but preserved them for years to come, in part through the millions of pounds of extra money we’ve brought in – including £30 million for regeneration, millions for employment schemes and personally lobbying government to bring Harrow an extra £1.4 million in this year’s budget settlement.

“And we have listened to our residents by investing more than ever in services for the most vulnerable and the fight against Domestic Violence.

“It is now the right time for a new Leader to take up the baton and build on the foundations I have laid.

"We will continue to work together, united – so while the face at the top will change, this council’s priorities and ambitions will remain the same.”
