CELEBRITY recycling status will be furnished upon five local residents as they become the face of Brent Council's new recycling scheme.

The lucky residents will become "green stars" as part of the campaign to tackle litter and improve recycling.

The council's new waste service started on April 1, meaning better recycling and improved street cleaning for the borough's thousands of residents.

On Monday, a new fleet of vehicles will take to the streets to deliver the service bearing images of "green stars" Mia Rafalowicz-Campbell, 15, Manjula Shan, 57, Sharra Satenaylayne, 18, Dave Edwards and Tony Sisson, 77, who have backed the new campaign.

The age bridging stars are also featuring on posters and in adverts as part of the campaign, which calls on residents to "Recycle it" and "Bin it".

Some of the "green stars" came face-to-face for the first time with the refuse collection vehicles bearing their images when the new waste service and campaign was launched at Wembley's Olympic Way on March 30.

The council is investing over £2m a year more in a seven-year deal which will see Veolia Environmental Services provide the service.

Councillor Irwin Van Colle, lead member for environment, planning and culture at Brent Council, said: "Brent Council is determined to make our streets cleaner and raise recycling rates. We have invested more in a first class waste service that will enable us to do that. Now we need local people to play their part - by Recycling it' and Binning it'."

Pascal Hauret, London municipal services director for Veolia Environmental Services, said: "We are delighted and very proud to build upon our existing relationship with Brent Council by delivering this expanded service.

"Using new technology and our local area knowledge, we will be prioritising improvements and development in recycling and street cleansing services to ensure Brent residents receive a first class service."

Improvements to the service will include more frequent cleaning for hundreds of the borough's streets, better recycling facilities for flats and plastic bottle recycling for all homes with green bins.
