A college is set to move to Harrow after a century serving its old community.

The Institute, currently based in East Finchley, is set to move to Kingsbury in January.

The adult education college, the oldest of its kind in north London, currently has two bases in East Finchley, at Bishop Douglass School, in Hamilton Road, and at the Archer Academy, in Beaumont Close.

Arts courses will be the first to move in January. Other classes will continue to be held at Bishop Douglass School, which will move in September next year.

Evening classes currently held at the Archer Academy will not be affected for the rest of the academic year.

Greville Waterman, chief executive of The Institute said: “The decision to make the move from our heartland has not been taken lightly. The Institute has served the community of Hampstead Garden Suburb for more than 100 years.

“We have looked at all possible options in the area but despite our best efforts and several false hopes, it has proved impossible to find suitable and affordable premises in the immediate vicinity. Masons House represents a new beginning for the Institute and ensures its survival.”

The Institute will hold two events at Bishop Douglass School on November 6 and 10 to give more information on the move.
