Parents and neighbours have their last chance to have their say about a primary school's plans to become an academy this week.

Aylward Primary School, in Pangbourne Drive, Stanmore, is consulting parents about whether the school should become an academy as part of the Bentley Wood Trust.

The trust for Bentley Wood High School would be the academy sponsor for Aylward and the plans come after the school was put into special measures following an Ofsted report in May last year.

In a statement, the governors of both schools said: “We believe that children at Aylward Primary School should be making better progress and achieving higher standards than they have been.

“Bentley Wood High School has the capability and capacity to support the headteacher and the staff at Aylward Primary School to sustain the improvements seen in the 2013 results, and improve the progress and achievement of pupils even further.

“Local schools should work together, support each other, and learn from each other to benefit the local community.”

The consultation ends this week. In plans set out in a consultation document, the school would keep its name, school uniform, school day structure and the same staff.

It said: “Aylward Primary School would benefit from support from Bentley Wood High School to the headteacher, the leadership team, and the local governing body to ensure effective leadership and management that is focused on pupil performance.”

Under the plans, The Bentley Wood Trust would be responsible for both schools and as an academy it would be responsible for its admission policy and be the employer of its own staff.

Bentley Wood became an academy in 2011 and was given Ofsted's highest 'outstanding’ rating in 2012.
