Mayor of Harrow calls for help translating borough's motto into the borough's 88 languages

The Mayor of Harrow is calling for people from all ethnic backgrounds to help celebrate the borough's 60th anniversary.

Cllr Nana Asante says she hopes to capture the diversity of the area as part of the council’s celebrations of Harrow's 60 years as a borough.

In 1954 Harrow was given borough status by the Queen and this year the mayor is organising a series of celebrations.

Cllr Asante said: “The last census suggested that more than 88 languages are spoken in Harrow.

“I would like us to capture this linguistic diversity by translating our borough motto into as many languages as possible.

“Our borough motto in Latin reads 'Salus Populi Suprema Lex', or in English 'The Welfare of the People is the Highest Law'. I would like us to create a lasting heirloom which will be admired in years to come.”

The Mayor is also looking to contact people who were children in 1954 and were part of the celebrations 60 years ago to invite them for afternoon tea in the mayor’s parlour.

Those interested in helping the mayor in the borough's anniversary celebrations can contact mayor@harrow.gov.uk or call 020 8424 1232.

Strange message: Why to emphasise ethnicity? All should be encouraged and invited to participate in this historic occasion which could sit well with Under One Sky!

Could it be because of the stereotyped perception that those from ethnic background take their civic responsibilities less seriously or could it be to engage with the ‘ethnic minorities’ before May elections?
