The former leader of Harrow Borough Council has welcomed an investigation into accusations of institutional racism.

The probe was announced this week by the authority's new leader, Conservative councillor Susan Hall.

It follows an allegation by one councillor and was welcomed at last night's council meeting by leader of the Independent Labour group and former council leader Cllr Thaya Idaikkadar.

Cllr Idaikkadar said: “I welcome the call for an independent investigation by the chief executive into institutional racism in Harrow council.

“I request the appointment of the independent investigator will be made on a cross party basis and its terms of reference and scope of the investigation mutually agreed in a transparent manner.”

Earlier this year eight members of the Labour Party resigned to form the independent Labour group under Cllr Idaikkadar.

He then took control of the council cabinet with the support of the Conservatives, but was replaced as leader by Tory group leader Cllr Hall on September 16.

Cllr Hall said: “I have ordered an investigation into an allegation of racism made by one individual member.

“Harrow is a diverse borough and the authority has always reflected this, both in the representation of members and the highly professional approach of officers to their work.

“While I am confident there is no issue about race among council employees, as a precaution I will be asking a senior independent figure to look into these claims.

“The result of this investigation will be published as this council believes in transparency and has nothing to hide.”

The main aspects of the investigation have not been announced but details will be finalised over the coming weeks.
