A man who joked about running a marathon every time that Andre Gray scores this season, is following through with his claim.

David Robinson, a Watford FC fan near Peterborough, was adamant that Andre Gray would not score again this season, as he tweeted in jest about Gray’s recent poor performance.

Gray had only scored once this season when Watford won 3-2 against Coventry.

On February 27, after being so confident that Gray would fail to score again, he jokingly tweeted: “I’ll run a marathon every time Andre Gray scores this season.”

The striker, who struggled to find form throughout this season, got Watford back to its winning ways as he scored twice and beat bottom of the league Wycombe Wanderers 2-0.

After the match, he tweeted: “I have to stick to my word, Ill be running 26.2 miles over a week, for the next 2 weeks, courtesy of Gray’s 2 goals scored against #WWFC. I’ll update progress using this thread!

“Any donations are a bonus and will be raised for @MindCharity.”

The idea sparked after the AFC Bournemouth vs Watford game, when a commentator mentioned a Cherries fan doing the same thing every time Dominic Solanke scored a goal, he would run a marathon.

Mr Robinson said: “It’s a very typical thing to see on social media where people are quite reactionary and they don’t really follow through. When I tweeted this, I had very little belief that Gray would score.

“But I thought since he did score, I should follow through. And I thought it would be a good challenge as well, albeit a very difficult one.”

The Hornets fan said Gray has been on a “horrible run”, and while he tries his hardest, he is “certainly not the best technical player” at the club.

“I think Gray had a hard time since coming into the club, and I don’t think he was perhaps that well suited to the club. I’m not confident he’ll go on a great scoring-run and make a career out of Watford, but perhaps I didn’t expect him to find it so hard this season.”

“I absolutely despise running, I couldn’t think of anything worse,” he said, “I’m just hoping now that Gray won’t score again!”
