ACTORS will bring Fighter Command back to life this weekend, as RAF Bentley Priory opens its doors to the public.

The spiritual home of The Few opened its doors for the first time in 80 years last September and will once again be busy with residents eager to soak up local history at the Grade II* listed mansion house.

On Thursday and Friday, hourly tours of 40 people will snake through the historic rooms and corridors where Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding masterminded the defence of the country during the Battle of Britain.

On Saturday and Sunday, Dowding's office and other areas will return to their former glory with an historical re-enactment.

Squadron Leader Erica Ferguson, of the RAF Bentley Priory Battle of Britain Trust, said: “They are bringing it back to life as it was in Dowding's time.

“They are going to set up an operations area just like Dowding had and they will show us how the information came in, how it was interpreted and what was done with it, so really the whole key wartime role will be recreated.”

A spitfire and hurricane fly past will be held at 3.20pm on Saturday.

Harrow and Bushey museums will have stalls demonstrating life in the two areas during the war, and there will be a map of local bomb damage during the Blitz.

The guided tours are fully booked, but the Bentley Priory's doors will be open free of charge from 10am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday.

The Harrow Times will be at the event providing coverage on the day.
